about

Congress-Woman Malinda Jackson Parker, a.k.a. Ma Parker, vocals and piano, recorded in the early 1970s in Liberia. Audio restorations from vinyl sources.

This expanded edition replaces an earlier 5-track EP, "Tubman Goodtype Songs of Liberia," first issued digitally in 2005. All tracks from that EP are included here but were remastered in 2020.

Sept. 2023 UPDATE: It was belatedly discovered that the recording of "Cousin Mosquito #2" on this LP is about 1/4-step sharp. The title of the Rachmaninoff work is "Prelude in C# Minor" (which MJP announces in her intro), but in fact the pitch on this recording is midway between C# and D. Assuming the piano was properly tuned during the recording session, either the tape transfer speed for this 1972 LP was glitched or there was a similar maladjustment in the mastering process. (The recording was transferred from a vintage LP at a faithfully steady, correct turntable speed.) MJP issued the identical recording on a 10" EP which features the performance in the correct pitch, making the recording 20 seconds longer. That version will be issued on a followup MJP collection. Because the higher-pitched version has been on the market for a long time, it shall remain available here, in case anyone prefers it that way.
